Vanessa Vandy is a director and DOP who grew up in New Zealand and Finland. Vanessa’s style lies in her ability to move people, capture their attention and evoke an emotion. She strives to create videos and films that have a positive impact.
Vanessa spent her late teens competing as an elite athlete representing Finland in pole vault. This was an 8-year effort which resulted in her representing Finland at the 2008 Olympics, receiving bronze medals at two junior European Championships as well as being invited to compete in the 2009 World Championships. However, she had always had the itch to work on creative projects and thus composed her own music in-between her studies and athletics. This hobby eventually introduced her into the world of filmmaking after being asked to compose music for several short films. Due to her love for developing her technical skills, she ended up learning each of the post production skills one by one.
Vanessa’s love for cinematography and directing was sparked in 2015 after being asked to create a few startup videos from start to finish. After working as a videographer for a couple of years, her interest for filming and directing took over. For the last few years as well as for today, Vanessa’s main focus has therefore been directing and DOP:ing. However, her knowledge about the various post-production techniques continue to be a great asset for filming and directing.
Vanessa’s short film Farewell marked her narrative directorial debut in 2017. The short film got selected as a finalist in One Screen Film Festival 2017 and officially selected into LA Shorts International Film Festival and Bermuda International Film Festival, which are both Academy Award qualifying festivals. Farewell also earned Vanessa a directorial nomination at the 2018 1,4 Awards in London among 140 top commercial and narrative filmmakers worldwide. Two of Vanessa’s videos (Farewell and Sailer - Insights Through Video) received top scores through Shiny Critiques which resulted in her being listed on the #ShinyList - a list that surfaces high-scoring, emerging and diverse directors worldwide. In late 2018 Vanessa was also added to Free The Bid’s directorial catalogue, a catalogue which showcases promising female directors around the world.
